UCAS information regarding invitations to submit essays, portfolios or attend an interview or audition

This year those universities and colleges that may interview or audition or request additional work, such as an essay or a portfolio, will be able to indicate through Course Search that a course may require one of these elements. In addition, a university or college will be able to send invitations to applicants online. If an applicant receives an invitation they must reply online using Track. They have an opportunity to accept, decline or request an alternative time and date. If they need to change the date they will need to do this directly with the university or college.Students will receive notification that a change has occurred on their application and should be vigilant in replying to the invitation on Track as soon as possible. Applicants accepting verbally with a university must also reply online using Track by the time and date given.

From the Vega Science Trust

www.vega.org.uk/video/series/10
Recently broadcasted on BBC2's Learning Zone, this series of science careers videos gives a unique insight into the everyday lives of young scientists and engineers from more unusual backgrounds.
What do scientists actually do? What is it like being a scientist? Most television science reports on completed work, and usually features the senior scientific figures that spearhead it. But real science is a rather different beast.
WWW.open2.net/snapshots/
snapshots gives insights into the lives of young people at the cutting edge of British science and engineering. Whether or not they will go on to be Nobel Laureates or FRS's, Dysons or Gates of tomorrow (and it will be fun trying to spot them) these are the people making them happen.

Open Evening at Marshall Aerospace, Cambridge Airport on Thursday 23rd April or Thursday 30th April 2009

Marshall Aerospace is now introducing a new higher education pathway available to students in our area. Aero Academy, a division of Marshall Aerospace of Cambridge Ltd., has entered into a new partnership with Kingston University in order to provide a new Foundation Degree course from October 2009.
Aero Academy, available locally at Cambridge Airport, is both practical and academic in content, which leads to a Foundation Degree and the potential of a successful career in the MRO (aircraft maintenance and repair) or related industries. It can also enable students to achieve an honours degree through an additional top-up year of full time study through flexible part time study over a longer period. The design of the programme draws on the Marshall tradition of high quality apprentice training and then Kingston University's expertise in developing vocationally relevant higher education.

Successful graduates of the course will be well placed to join the aerospace workforce and find a role within the industry where there is a shortage of skilled fitters, technicians and engineers. Graduates from our programme will have a wide range of career opportunities and be able to specialize, in their final year, in the disciplines of mechanical, electrical or design. We will also provide coaching and support in regard to job applications with aircraft maintenance organisations such as Marshall Aerospace and Inflite Engineering as well as Aircraft operators. Others may decide to use the transferable skills offered by Foundation Degree to progress to further professional qualifications.

The course covers a range of subjects required for a job in the industry, such as theory of flight, fault finding and repair techniques in both mechanical and electrical work, plus developing essential handskills from working metal and operating machinery. During the course, supervised work experience will be provided in conjunction with project assignments.

Marshall Aerospace is currently seeking candidates for the two year programme with a predicted 140 points, ideally including A-level mathematics plus a science subject. For those candidates who do not meet their predicted grades in these subjects a one-year introductory programme leading onto the two year course is available. Applicants will require a minimum of 80 points. Both the two and three year programme will be delivered entirely at Marshall Aerospace in Cambridge, with learning and hands-on experience taking place in classroom and workshop environments. pathways are available for those students wishing to progress on to an honours degree.

Students interested in finding out more about these opportunities are invited to attend an Open Evening at Marshall Aerospace, Cambridge airport on Thursday 23rd April or Thursday 30th April 2009. Please register your interest in attending one of these events by emailing or writing to the address below. Careers Event, 25/3/09

Don't forget today's Careers Event. Exhibitors include Gap Year Organisations, Employers, Training Providers and other FE colleges.

This is your chance to ask the right questions to the right people, and it could turn your whole future around.

Even if you think you have your future career sorted out, there's no reason why you shouldn't use this opportunity to put together a great back up plan.

You should have been given a sheet of paper in your last tutorial session that will tell you who is attending and where you can find them. Your tutor will also tell you what time to meet up, and then you can all go down to the hall together.

Good luck, Careers Department

We offer unrivalled excellence in subjects centred around the natural environment and equally inspiring courses in sport, design and management. Read on to find out more detailed information about your chosen subject area.

Sustainable Food at Writtle College

* Sustainable Food Management courses at Foundation and Undergraduate degree level.

* BSc (Hons) Sustainable Food Management with Marketing & Supply Chain Management or Business Management
* Global Crop Production
* Arable Crop Production
* Farm Livestock Production

* FdSc Sustainable Food Management

* Higher Certificate in Food Studies

Writtle College has developed these courses specifically to offer a holistic approach to Sustainable Food Management, encompassing all aspects of the food supply chain from on-farm production, through processing to marketing and retail. Students will be equipped to enter the food industry in a wide range of careers. The Food Industry as a whole is multi-faceted, covering primary producers, food analysts, packaging & processing technologists, marketing specialists, regulatory bodies and those with a specific interest in aspects of food culture. Of course, we all like our food; the opportunities for well-qualified individuals to enter into the food industry as a profession are becoming more widespread as interest and awareness improves.

"One in four food science and technology roles in the food and drink industry remain unfilled, representing a shortage of more than 2,000 qualified professionals'." - Improve, Food & Drink Sector Skills Council

Predicted roles after graduation include primary food production, food processing, new product development, supply chain, technical and quality assurance and retailer. All options can be studied full or part-time so are ideal for those who wish to study around their job or lifestyle.

Anglia Ruskin University Open Days for Years 12 and 13

Please note that the Careers Department has just received information regarding Anglia Ruskin University HE Information Days and Taster Days. This is one of the most popular University choices for Long Road Sixth Form students so we thought we’d highlight it for you. These special days are available for years 12 and 13 and give insight into University life and courses.

HE Information Days are ideal for Year 12 students who are thinking about their future. A mixture of talks and activities are provided which will both inform you about HE opportunities, whilst inspiring you to think constructively about how to achieve your goals. Typically, these run from 10am – 3pm and lunch is provided.

Subject Specific Taster Days are a great way for level 3 students to find out more about how a specific subject is taught at University level. The External Liaison Team is happy to discuss your requirements in detail and can develop Subject Specific Tater activities which support your syllabus.

To find out more, email external-liaison@anglia.ac.uk or call 0845 196 4725. So far, taster days are available in Health and Social Care, Education, Science and Technology, Arts. Law and Social Sciences, and Business.

Business and Entrepreneurship - a Reggae Story!

For those of you who like the idea of keeping in touch with the cutting edge of business development, please note that the Judge Business School of Cambridge University is due to begin its "Enterprise Tuesday" Lecture Series again on 20th January. The first speaker will be Levi Roots, last seen on "Dragons Den" trying to convince the Dragons to back his idea of Reggae Reggae Sauce!

Levi's talk will be about, "When do you pursue an opportunity and when do you decide not to? The role of intuition versus cold analytical decision making will be explored".

For a direct link for information about the lectures, click on http://www.cfel.jbs.cam.ac.uk/ and select the more icon in the left hand column of the section headed Enterprise Tuesday.

If you would like to attend this lecture, or any of the others on the timetable, then please note that they are FREE, however you must register online in order to attend. Registration needs to be done only the once and to do this you should go to the top of the Enterprise Tuesday page and follow the instructions in the left hand column, clicking where it says, "How to register".

We hope you enjoy the show!

You Go Further

For all those year 12 and year 13 students who are thinking about University in the future, (whether you have applied yet or not), please note that a new website has been set up by UCAS called www.yougofurther.co.uk. If you click on the link, it will take you through to the site where you can find out more information about University and even talk with other students who are in the same position as you. Try it. It may help you to make a more informed decision about your future.
