Apprenticeships in LAW with the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives

There’s this silly myth that to become a lawyer you have to go to university. This couldn’t be further from the truth and vocational learning in law is winning awards.

In 2011, The Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx) and the College of Law helped national law firm Irwin Mitchell set up an in-house training programme for their Law and Business School. Just last month it won the ‘Education and Training Initiative of the Year’ award at the British Legal Awards.

President of CILEx, Nick Hanning, was of course over the moon to see CILEx and its partners recognised in this way: “We were thrilled to win this award. CILEx has been providing exceptional vocational training in law for almost 50 years and we are absolutely committed to ensuring law firms have access to flexible training programmes, like the one we have helped set up with the College of Law and Irwin Mitchell.”

So what does this mean for you? Well it demonstrates the reputation we have gained during our 50 years as an education provider. Over 80 centres offer our established qualifications (some through distance learning), which can be used to become a fully qualified lawyer. We are also working to create nationally recognised legal apprenticeships similar to the one that won the recent award.

CILEx really is the best route to a career in law. The fees are affordable: the full route costs from £4,500 to £7,500 spread over the duration of your studies. And as you ‘earn whilst you learn’ on the job, your pockets will fill up with money as your brain fills up with knowledge. Parents don’t miss out either; when you qualify as a Chartered Legal Executive they can join you at our graduation ceremony.

So we’re winning awards, and you could too. Studying with CILEx isn’t just about getting the grades you need to pass. We encourage you to do your best at every step of the way. Each year we recognise the student with the highest grades with our ‘Student of the Year’ award. Just think how great that would look on your CV if that was you?

To find out more about CILEx qualifications, apprenticeships and membership, visit www.cilexcareers.org.uk and follow us on twitter CILExLawyers.

Engineering Apprenticeships with Babcock

A recent report by the Royal Academy of Engineering has found that British industry will need 100,000 new graduates in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects every year until 2020 just to maintain current employment numbers. At the moment the UK produces only 90,000 STEM graduates a year. The push to boost the UK’s engineering sector is a major focus for the government and there are career opportunities in a wide variety of fields – manufacturing, energy, utilities and transportation to name a few.

But you don’t have to go to university to get into the world of engineering. An Apprenticeship is increasingly being seen as a preferable alternative, both by employers and students. You get paid a wage whilst you learn, have the support of an employer and may even begin to be promoted up the career ladder before you finish your qualifications.

Babcock International Group has over 150 years experience in Engineering and is one of just a handful of Engineering training providers to achieve a ‘Grade 1 - Outstanding’ rating from Ofsted. We work with many of the leading names in Engineering, including EDF Energy, Network Rail, Southern Water and BAE Systems.

As an Engineering Apprentice you’ll work towards NVQ Level 2 and in most cases, go onto an Advanced Apprenticeship with NVQ Level 3.

Careers Event – Baker Tilly Accountancy - Bury St Edmunds

I’m delighted to announce that Baker Tilly, a leading provider of Accountancy and Business Advisory Services, will be holding a Careers Event in our Bury St Edmunds office on the evening of Thursday 8th November.  The event is open to anyone considering a career in accountancy and offers the chance to find out about Baker Tilly and the reality of being a modern day accountant (it’s about people and relationships, not just balance sheets).  There will also be the opportunity to meet current students and staff.

Baker Tilly is one of the UK’s Top 10 firms of accountants and business advisors, with more than 1,600 staff and 220 partners generating a fee income of £171m.  We have offices across the UK and are part of an international network too, so in the longer term we can offer opportunities across the country and beyond.

Each August, we look to take on high calibre students, at either school leaver (18+) or graduate level.  They’ll have the opportunity to study for industry leading qualifications, in a structured and well supported programme, enabling them to become fully qualified accountants across a range of disciplines.  Whilst we’re maintaining a graduate intake, we are very keen to recruit more school leavers, and feel we can offer a real alternative to university as students can study with us whilst earning a decent salary. At the end of two years of study with us, students joining immediately after A level will typically be at the same level as a newly recruited graduate, only with valuable business experience and without the graduate’s significant student debt.

To join us immediately after secondary education, applicants will need a good academic track record of 5 or more GCSEs grade C or above, including B at Maths & English Language, plus a predicted 260 UCAS points, excluding General Studies.   To join at graduate level, the requirement is 280 UCAS points and a 2:1 degree.  Full information about Baker Tilly and our study programmes can be found at www.bakertilly.co.uk.  Alternatively, please contact me on 01245 454072 to discuss further.

I do hope that both you and your students will be able to attend our Careers Event on 8th November, where you’ll hear more about Baker Tilly, the world of accountancy and get a chance to meet our current students.  We aim to run sessions from approximately 5pm to 8pm.  Booking is essential: to book a slot, please call 01284 763311.

Research indicates resilience in UK job creation

The Manpower Employment Outlook Survey is based on responses from 2,100 UK employers. It asks whether employers intend to hire additional workers or reduce the size of their workforce in the coming economic quarter. The national Seasonally Adjusted Net Employment Outlook of +1% indicates that the jobs market is still in positive territory, having shown similar promise in the second quarter of 2012 with an Outlook of +2%.

Firms are still looking to hire albeit at a weaker pace than before but the sort of hiring that is going on is where you’d least expect it. Take the Finance and Business Services sector for example, which is +13%. We’ve all heard about banks shedding thousands of jobs, but the banks are also hiring thousands of temporary workers to deal with the fallout from the misselling of Payment Protection Insurance. Whilst these jobs aren’t for life, a number of the banks have announced recently that they are setting aside more money to deal with the claims. As a result, the finance sector- so critical to the UK economy - is going to need to hold onto these workers for some time to come,” said ManpowerGroup UK Managing Director, Mark Cahill.

The Utilities sector continues to hire apace as well. In fact with a runaway score of +16%, the sector sits at a 5 year high. Cahill adds: “The Utilities sector has been consistently strong in recent months. You’ve only got to look at the recent decision by EDF Energy to build a power plant at Hinkley Point in Somerset. Not only will this deliver secure affordable low carbon energy to around 5 million homes in the UK, it’s also creating 5000 jobs in the South West.”

There is also an interesting split between large and small employers in terms of attitudes to hiring. Big businesses are more optimistic (+8%) than at any time since 2010. However, when it comes to firms employing fewer than 10 members of staff – so-called micro businesses – are feeling the pinch at -2%.
