Free Lecture by the IET: The future of Computing and the Internet of Things

TO A TRILLION AND BEYOND: THE FUTURE OF COMPUTING AND THE INTERNET OF THINGS. PRESTIGE LECTURE.
Dr. Krisztian Flautner, Vice President of Technology at ARM

With classical technology scaling running out of steam, predictions of doom and gloom about the
future of the computer business abound. However, as we move from an era of human-centric
connectivity to a new machine-centric era, there are numerous opportunities to innovate, providing
solutions that can scale to hundreds of billions or even trillions of interconnected intelligent
devices. The defining feature of this era will be that computers become invisible and move from
attention-grabbing devices into  the background. For some this is utopia, for others it conjures
the imagery of George Orwell. This talk will examine the technology underpinnings of this
interconnected future and explore how the notion of trust must evolve to keep pace with both
engineering and social developments. How do we measure trust? How do we design trustworthy systems when no one has full control and overall understanding? How do we know that artificial intelligence is doing what it is supposed to? ...
The Prestige Lecture will be given by Dr. Krisztian Flautner who is vice president of technology at
ARM. Previously, Kris was general manager of the Internet of Things Business Unit and VP of
Research and Development at ARM. He is focused on new business opportunities and the proliferation of ARM technologies. He received a PhD  in computer science and engineering, along with a number of other degrees, from the University of Michigan, where he has also served as a visiting scholar.  He has authored or co-authored over 80 publications, including key contributions on  computer architecture, software, and microarchitecture. Dr. Flautner received various best paper awards including the 2017 ISCA influential paper award for  groundbreaking research in power-efficient computing, to show that at least one of these ideas received broad adoption by the industry and researchers alike.

The Pye Story

Bob Bates and Richard Howes of the Pye History Trust

Pye can be considered as one of the founding companies of the Cambridge Phenomenon. Bob Bates and Richard Howes of the Pye History Trust will tell the story of how Pye grew from a start-up in

a garden shed in Cambridge in 1896 until it became one of the leading UK technology companies. At its peak in 1966 it had more than 60 companies, over 20 overseas companies employing 30,000 staff

worldwide with 7,000 employees based in the Cambridge area. The story as presented will describe some of the key people who drove the company and give an overview of the innovative technologies and products that the company produced. Finally, the fall of the company and how it was taken over will be presented.

MEASUREMENT SYSTEMS & INSTRUMENTATION IN THE OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY
Dr Wes Maru, Oil and Gas Measurement Ltd. (OGM), Ely.
In 2017 the Oil and Gas industry spent $400 billion on capital expenditure and employed 350,000
people in the UK. Oil and Gas remains an important industry for the UK and is heavily reliant on
instrumentation systems to ensure the industry operates safely and efficiently.
Dr. Wes Maru, R & D Manager, of OGM Ltd., based in Ely, will talk about measurement systems and instrumentation in the oil and gas industry and in particular on the flow measurement
instrumentations that are installed, including those widely employed in Custody Transfer
Applications.  Ultrasonic and Turbine Flow Metering devices as well as Mixing and Sampling Systems that are characterised via Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Electrical Capacity Tomography (ECT), will be presented as well as the techniques for how flows are predicted using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).
The devices deployed for Custody Transfer Applications are usually referred to as the “Cash
Register” of the industry as they are used to enable transactions between oil buyers and sellers.
They are also used to set government taxation and are required to achieve the highest possible
accuracy, repeatability and reliability, which is a never ending operational and technological
challenge. For the public these devices not only determine energy bills but also the cost of weekly
shopping.
Dr Wes Maru is a recognised expert in multi-phase flow tomography and modelling and was awarded the prestigious Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng) Award in 2016. He has published papers and presented at conferences on measurement systems in  Oil and Gas.

24/1/18 – Annual Apprenticeship Careers Event

The college welcomed 23 organisations from a broad range of disciplines yesterday, all championing the potential for progression from Long Road via Apprenticeships.  Within these organisations, we had companies in the STEM sector such as Medimune and the LGC Group, whilst Thales and Arcus Global ensured that students learned of opportunities in the IT sector.  Engineering, another local hot spot, was covered by Carters Construction with able support from the Institute of Engineering and TechnologyBidwells (Estate Agency), Lloyds Bank and First Intuition (Accountancy training), presented opportunities that might appeal to those with their minds set upon Business opportunities.  The Army and Navy alerted students to a broad range of opportunities as far reaching as health care and administration (not just combat!), whilst the presence of the College of West Anglia, the College of Animal Welfare and CRC all helped us to fulfil our requirement to ensure that students are aware of a broad range of progression routes.  Finally, Ridgeons, Envigo, PA Consulting and the Local Authority’s Enablement Service promoted awareness of more opportunities in the local region.  Feedback from students and exhibitors alike was very positive, whilst those teachers who brought their classes to the event were very pleased that it had helped students to link their course with potential future destinations (some even sorted out work experience on the spot!)

A big thank you to all those who were involved and we look forward to positive future outcomes.

Are you Open to work that excites? Retail opportunities available at TJX Europe

A little bit about us
You might not have heard of TJX Europe, but you’ve probably heard of our brands – TK Maxx and Homesense. So you may already know about our somewhat different approach to retail. It all revolves around the idea of Off-Price Retailing which, in short, means we offer quality labels for less. We do this by empowering our buyers to make decisions on the spot. They’re on the hunt throughout the year, buying merchandise from thousands of vendors around the world. It’s about thinking fast, being creative and making great deals. This means that no two deliveries are ever the same. And neither are any two days. It’s an unconventional approach which is echoed throughout all areas of TJX Europe.
A little bit about you
We offer Graduate Programmes, Placements and Apprenticeships across the different areas of our business – including Merchandising & Buying, Finance, Product Development, Marketing, Logistics and Loss Prevention. Whichever route you take, you’ll start with a comprehensive induction and then continue to develop yourself through a series of workshops and training programmes. All of which will enable you to take on responsibility quickly.

Are you interested in studying in the USA?

Sutton Trust US Programme

The Sutton Trust US Programme closes for applications this weekend on Sunday 14 January. This is the last chance for year 12 students (S5 in Scotland, Year 13 in Northern Ireland) to apply to join the programme.

Students can apply now: https://us.suttontrust.com/

Last year, we helped 62 students gain places at top US universities, with the costs covered by financial aid and scholarships. http://www.fulbright.org.uk/news/us-success-for-british-state-school-students

You can see biographies of successful students now studying in the US here: https://us.suttontrust.com/wp-content/myimages/2017/07/Sutton-Trust-US-Programme-Participants-Attending-US-Universities-in-2017-18.pdf

Students currently on the programme have made this video about why they would recommend other students apply: https://youtu.be/tJLh8OyqYLQ

What is it?

The Sutton Trust US Programme is an 18 month-long programme for talented Year 12 students from across the UK. It includes two residentials in London to help programme participants explore US study, before all 150 students spend a week doing the Programme's summer school at US universities (last year we stayed at MIT or Yale), during which we visit a number of universities in the US. As the students go into Year 13, if they want to apply for US universities alongside their UCAS options, we will support them, their families and their schools with the application process, including further UK residentials.

So far in five years, we have helped more than 250 British students go to top US universities with scholarships from the universities.

The programme is delivered by the Fulbright Commission, who are experts in helping students in the UK study degrees in the US.

How much does it cost for the students?

The programme is FREE for students - including travel, food, accommodation, admissions test preparation and more.

Who are we looking for?

We select 150 students to take part each year. These students will:

  • Currently be in Year 12 or equivalent (eg S5 in Scotland, Year 13 in Northern Ireland)
  • Attend a state school or college
  • Not hold US citizenship
  • Be from a low-income family (generally, this will mean a household earning £45,000 or less)

We are looking for applicants that meet all or most of these criteria:

  • England and Northern Ireland: Have achieved at least eight GCSEs at grade A or 7 or above
  • Wales: Have achieved at least eight GCSEs at grade A or above
  • Scotland: Have achieved at least six B passes at National 5 or above
  • Show a commitment to the programme and interest in US culture and higher education
  • Have a strong school reference

We welcome applicants from across the UK, and individuals from a broad range of ethnic, religious and socio-economic backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

When is the deadline for students to apply?

Students must submit their application by Sunday, 14 January 2018.

However, we strongly advise they get started earlier, as the application form requires some thinking!

Where can I find out more and apply?

There's lots more information on our website: https://us.suttontrust.com and the application form can also be found there.
